Building Productivity Systems
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it."
Genesis 1:27–28 (NKJV)
All my life I have been curious about what makes a successful life, and this curiosity has led me down a path of much study and research. Since I came to know the Lord more than a decade ago, God's plan for mankind has been a subject of great interest to me, and I have been studying it for years.
Genesis 1 is a great starting point for understanding the mind of God in creating man. Concepts such as spirit, soul and body are set out clearly for us, and the harmony of man's tripartite being is imperative for his well-being and success in this life. Even more important is learning and implementing the principles of success and prosperity, which are founded on God's blessing over Adam in verses 26 to 29: be productive, multiply, and conquer the earth. God lists productivity and the capability to produce as essential to operating in the blessing that makes rich and adds no sorrow. I write more on this in my book Poverty, Wealth and Prosperity.
The only right way to make it big in this life is to adopt a consciousness of productivity and production. You see this particularly in the dominant forces of industry and business: productivity and production lead to wealth and power. As necessary as it is to be productive spiritually, in the various spiritual activities available to us, it is also very important to be productive in soul and body. Abraham was the most blessed man on earth, yet he used his physical body to fight wars. Israel was given the promised land, but it took decades of obedience, work and war to enter it. The point I am making is that unless you are productive, or have some system of production to which you adhere, you are very unlikely to succeed in life. Life requires productivity. The simple definition of productivity is doing or accomplishing everything you intended to do in a given time frame, and this makes God the most productive and efficient Being there is, having created and restored the universe in just six days, 144 hours. Focus and intentionality are the key to high achievement, the skill most necessary for having a chance at life.
Productivity systems are critical to achieving our goals and objectives, in both our personal and our professional lives. A productivity system is a set of strategies, techniques and tools that help us make the best use of our time, energy and resources to achieve the outcomes we desire efficiently. Goal-setting is a fundamental part of any productivity system, because it defines what we want to achieve and provides a road map to get there. Here, then, is how to build a productivity system and a process for setting goals that can help you achieve the outcomes you desire. You need structure to be successful; unstructured lives rarely amount to anything significant.
Building a Productivity System
Define your objectives
The first step in building a productivity system is to define your objectives, the outcomes or results you want to achieve. Objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Specific objectives are clear and well defined. Measurable objectives can be quantified. Achievable objectives are realistic and can be accomplished with the resources available. Relevant objectives are aligned with your values, vision and mission. Time-bound objectives have a deadline or a timeline.
Prioritise your objectives
Once you have defined your objectives, the next step is to prioritise them, identifying which are the most important and the most urgent. The Eisenhower Matrix is a useful tool for this. It divides objectives into four categories: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, and neither urgent nor important. Prioritising your objectives will help you focus on the most critical tasks and make the best use of your time and energy.
Plan your time
Planning your time is an essential part of a productivity system. Effective planning means allocating your time to the most important tasks and avoiding distractions. One effective approach is time-blocking, scheduling specific blocks of time for different tasks. Another useful technique is the Pomodoro technique, working in twenty-five-minute periods with short breaks in between. The key is to find an approach to planning that works for you and helps you make the best use of your time and energy.
Use productivity tools
Many productivity tools are available to help you make the best use of your time and energy, among them task managers, note-taking apps, calendar apps and project management tools. Task managers help you track and prioritise your tasks; note-taking apps help you capture ideas and information; calendar apps help you schedule appointments and events; and project management tools help you manage complex projects. The key is to find the tools that fit your needs and help you achieve your objectives efficiently.
Establish a productive mindset
Establishing a productive mindset is essential to building a productivity system. It means developing positive habits and attitudes that keep you focused, motivated and productive: setting realistic expectations, avoiding perfectionism, staying organised and taking breaks. The key is to cultivate a positive and proactive attitude that helps you overcome challenges and achieve your goals.
A Process for Setting Goals
Identify your values
The first step in setting goals is to identify your values, the guiding principles that define what is important to you. They may include integrity, creativity, family, health and success. Identifying your values helps you align your goals with your core beliefs and principles.
Create a vision
Once you have identified your values, the next step is to create a vision, a mental picture of your desired future. Your vision should be inspiring and motivating, and it should align with your values. Creating a vision helps you clarify your goals and provides a road map for achieving them.
Set specific goals
Once you have a vision, the next step is to set specific goals, the particular outcomes or results you want to achieve. Like your objectives, your goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.
Break goals down into milestones
Breaking your goals down into milestones helps you achieve them efficiently. Milestones are specific achievements or events that mark your progress toward your goals, and they help you track your progress, stay motivated and make adjustments where necessary.
Develop action plans
Action plans are essential to achieving your goals. They set out the specific actions you need to take, with tasks, deadlines and the resources needed, and they help you stay focused, organised and on track.
Track your progress
Tracking your progress means monitoring your movement toward your goals, evaluating your performance and making adjustments where necessary. It helps you identify areas for improvement, stay motivated and make informed decisions about your goals.
Celebrate your achievements
Celebrating your achievements is an important part of the process. It helps you stay motivated, build confidence, reinforce good habits and maintain a positive and proactive mindset.
Conclusion
A productivity system and a process for setting goals can help you achieve your greatest dreams efficiently; if you cannot plan and structure your life, it is practically impossible to accomplish anything. Do not settle. Laziness is for fools, but diligence is a trait of the wise. The goal-setting process helps you identify your values, create a vision, set specific goals, break them down into milestones, develop action plans, track your progress and celebrate your achievements. By implementing these strategies and techniques, you can make the best use of your time, energy and resources to achieve your goals and objectives. Come on: commit today to living the focused life. It is the best life there is.
