The Benefit of Praying in Tongues

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV)

Imagine that you could pray perfect prayers at all times, without depending on the limits of your understanding to articulate your petitions to the Lord perfectly. Imagine a way to express your deepest feelings, thoughts and requests to God without needing to enlarge your natural vocabulary. Imagine being able to depend wholly on the Holy Spirit in prayer, dealing with issues and dangers, present or future, of which your mind is not even aware. Imagine being able to access the wisdom and power of God in your life at all times. Imagine that you could save the lives of your loved ones and of countless others around the world. Imagine how life would be if you could partner with the Holy Spirit by praying God's will at all times. These imaginings, and more, are made reality through praying in tongues.

We in the twenty-first century have very little understanding of this way of praying, and as with all things we do not understand, we tend to underappreciate it and place little value on it. It does not have to be that way for you, because the Scriptures give us ample reason to engage in this kind of praying, not occasionally but consistently. First of all, it was demonstrated in the book of Acts as the first activity of the Holy Spirit that marked the birth of the Church. On that fact alone we can conclude that speaking in tongues is one of the best gifts given to all the members of the body of Christ.
