Mnēmē TheouContemplations on the Divine Mysteries

Take No Thought

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

Matthew 6:31 (KJV)

The mind is the greatest asset given to human beings, yet through draconian systems of education we have somehow been taught that the mind's job is to process knowledge and information, which could not be further from the truth. The mind is more than a thinking tool. It regulates the entire body, its organs and its nervous system. It creates and controls a person's outward realities, for all of life flows from the soul. This is something the god of the kosmos has worked hard to make humanity forget.

Thinking, though an important function of the mind, can become a great hindrance to living the life you desire, especially when your thoughts carry destructive potential. Thoughts are creative substance, creative energy, and this means that the best way to think is always in agreement with God. Better still, there are things you should never think about, as Jesus said in the scripture above; more on this shortly. Our minds have been programmed to be obsessed with thinking, and overthinking, about our problems, and this is what gives strength to the negative forces that perpetuate undesired outcomes in our lives. It is why many fail to actualise God's promises in their lives.

God is a supernatural Being. He is outside the realm of thought, and in fact, to cooperate successfully with God requires as little thinking as possible. Jesus told Peter that his soul was not involved in his answer that Jesus was the Christ; it came directly from heaven. The information bypassed the faculty of thought, and it was through this that Peter received his blessing. The truth is that God does not want us thinking when it comes to Him; His Word does the thinking for us. Let me put it this way: thinking can become the greatest hindrance to walking in, and experiencing, the supernatural. You cannot work with God and overthink; it will throw you out of the realm of possibility. With God, you act; you do not think.

This is what determines our success in operating the supernatural resources for life: the thought life must be conditioned to submit to God, because the spiritual world, from which all physical matter comes, is governed by the Word. All thought energy is subject to the Word. Everything with creative potential is subject to the Word, and this is the secret to living a great life. You do not need to think when the Word is presented; you need only to act. When God speaks, He does not suggest; He commands. This is what we need to understand, because we human beings are full of opinions and excuses, brought out by the thought life. When you learn the way of divine commands, you will learn not to think in that dimension. Abraham did not question, think it over or even discuss it with his wife; he simply acted when God commanded him to offer Isaac, and through that act of obedience God added another dimension to the blessing of Abraham: multiplication and dominion.

Your greatest miracles are hindered by your overthinking and your constant questioning of God, because you have been programmed to think you are clever. You cannot outsmart God. Every successful person in the Bible, everyone who received a supernatural manifestation of the promises of God, did so only by acting on what God told them. Jesus said, do not even think about your life, what you will eat or what you will wear. There are already spiritual systems of God's provision at work, ensuring that you are provided for. But what do we do? The very thing we are told not to do, and then we wonder why there is no consistent manifestation of provision in our lives. Can you see, beloved, how your thoughts are hindering the flow of God in your life?

Divine instructions do not require processing; they require prompt action. You obey the Word; you do not question it. When you have the Word of God on a matter, that settles it: lay down all thinking in that area. The Word is final. Do not let your thoughts question the authority of the Word and have the last say, or you will sink like Peter. What changed Peter's testimony was his thoughts. Zechariah's thinking made him mute, because overthinking is tied to unbelief, and it can disrupt a great deal in your life. Stop overthinking things beyond your control, or you will experience unending delays in life. When Jesus says, "Come," and bids you walk on the water, that is it. You do not need to think scientifically about the viscosity of water or the possibility of walking on it. He commanded, and that is enough; there is nothing to think about. If the Word said come, then He knows you can. Can you see it now? Your biggest failure has been the thought life. Do what Jesus told you, and practise it. Stop thinking about your life, your bills and your problems. The world tells you that thinking is a problem-solving skill, but Jesus tells you otherwise. Whom will you believe?

Beloved, learn to labour in the Word. Invest yourself in it. Give yourself entirely to seeing the word of God fulfilled in your life, and you will become a wonder. Go through your journals and recordings, remember what God has told you, and start doing it, and you will begin to experience wonders. You do not have to think about what God wants you to do; you just need to do it. If you want to experience the grace, provision and glory of God, remember what Mary said: "Whatever He says to you, do it." Sure enough, they did, and great was the testimony. Great testimonies come from obeying Jesus. Take no thought.
