The Discipline to Seek God

So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you.

Proverbs 7:15 (NKJV)

There is so much about the ways, the nature and the heart of God that human beings will never know unless they train themselves to seek Him. He can be found. His presence and power will go on mystifying us for as long as we will not make the effort Moses made to ascend the mountain, a picture of seeking God.

Faith is the starting point, and seeking God is the vehicle to finding Him. Prayer is, of course, the greatest spiritual means of seeking God, and I do not mean the five-minute "God bless me" kind. I mean importunate prayer, the kind that does not stop until it receives what it seeks. Training yourself to press in prayer for hours will eventually bring you into the Spirit of God. There the voice of God becomes clearer, the questions of life are answered and its secrets revealed, but the best thing a life of prayer will give you is fellowship with God.

Yet I remember how attached we are to our social lives and to the distractions this world has to offer, and how we have drained our souls of any desire and tenacity to seek, and to be in, the presence of Almighty God. Along the way we have forgotten the One who cares for us and loves us more than we can ever imagine. We have robbed ourselves of precious time with the One who holds our destiny in His hands, who knows us better than we know ourselves.

Most of us are guilty of being absent from the closet of prayer. How can we expect public rewards if we have no secret sessions with God? The Lord has opened the door to His throne, and we must not deceive ourselves: the secret place of prayer is the surest way to get there.

The most important thing in life, more important even than quoting the Bible, is encountering God. Have you encountered Him yet? Ask yourself what effort you have made to encounter Him, or whether you are waiting for a miraculous touch. It may never come until you take action. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you; that is how it works.

A fish will struggle to live in any environment outside its natural habitat. How have we human beings managed to live without His presence? Could this be why so many of our lives are out of balance?
