The Force of Faith

Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Faith is a very powerful force. It is responsible for everything we see in the physical world: great inventions and great businesses have come by it, and great wealth and power have been accumulated through it. On the spiritual plane, a great many supernatural things have taken place in this world by faith, as when Enoch did not see death but was taken into heaven alive.

All these humanly impossible phenomena bear the signature of faith. What makes faith so powerful is its source: the spoken Word of God. That is what gives faith its powerful nature. We could say that faith is the energy released from God's voice; when God speaks, faith is released, and nothing is as powerful as the Word of God. That is why it is such a powerful force to live by.

This world is not without its trials and tribulations; in fact, it is certain that everyone will experience them at some point. But faith can give you immunity from these attacks of life.

The opening scripture implies that the darts of Satan are fiery, but that they lose their strength and sting against faith, because faith is a shield against the many weapons, tricks and attacks Satan throws at us. To have faith is to have protection and immunity from ever being overcome by the adversities of life. It does not mean you will never encounter challenges, hardships and attacks, but they will not have the power to destroy you. You will always come out on top.

Jesus said that to live by faith is to live by the word that proceeds from God's mouth, and the written Word is not far from that. So meditation on the Word of God is the great, yet underused, secret to building a strong spiritual foundation and a strong base of faith. Jude also admonishes us that by praying in the Spirit we build ourselves up in our faith.

One last thing I want to point out is found in Joshua 1:8. Joshua heard God's audible voice, and yet the Lord still sent him back to the book and commanded him to meditate on the Word of God. That was the secret of Joshua's success and victories in life and in his service to God: the faith that came from listening to God's voice, and his diligence in meditation.
