Hyperballō Megethos

And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.

Ephesians 1:19 (NKJV)

The title of this reading is taken from our opening scripture. It describes the lengths to which God went in the use of His mighty power when He raised Jesus from the dead, and how much God wants us to know that this power is available to anyone who dares to believe.

Hyperballō megethos, "exceeding greatness," means to throw something beyond the mark, to exceed the limits. In English we might say to break a record, to transcend. In other words, when God raised Jesus from the dead, He transcended the limits of His power; He went beyond the normal use of it. God used more of His power in raising Jesus from the dead, for instance, than when He created the universe. The implication of this scripture is that God extended Himself, stretched Himself beyond the limit; in resurrecting Jesus there was an exertion of strength and power that God does not ordinarily use. This is not surprising, because Jesus, who was Life Himself, was God, and was truly incapable of dying unless He chose to. This scripture gives us a glimpse of what it took to raise up a member of the Godhead. How amazing.

This is a truth God wants all His children to know: resurrection power belongs to everyone who believes, and it can be directed toward us and our needs upon request. God went to such lengths to let us know that we are as important to Him as Jesus is. He can and will direct toward us the same power He used to raise Jesus and seat Him at His right hand, and He really wants us to know and to imagine this reality. Let us do just that for a moment. Imagine that you had the transcendent power of God at your disposal, and that you knew it is by the operation of this power that Jesus is not only alive but ruling the universe at this moment. I tell you what possessing and operating this power would give you: not only equal standing with the Monarch of the universe, but operational capability in the use of His abilities. You would be able to do not only what Jesus did before His death, but what He can do now.

Some will call this blasphemy. I will tell you what blasphemy is: it is refusing to accept the Word of God and to believe the truth of Scripture. All I am doing is trying to activate your dianoia, your understanding, to see who and what God has made you in Christ, and it is all in the Book. We are the real supermen of this world; we just do not know it yet. But I believe there is a generation bold enough to believe everything God says about them, who will choose to look into the mirror of the Word and of transfiguration and accept that this is who they are, whatever their senses or the world tell them. This generation will charge forward to finish what their Master began, delivering many into the same power and light along the way. These are the true believers, who will not hide behind pews and pulpits but stand on the mountaintops and show forth the magnificent glory of the indwelling God, toward those who believe. Remember that.
